140mm Flat Burr Manufacturing Case Study for Commercial Coffee Grinding
Project Overview
Case Study: Custom 140 mm Flat Burr Set for a Ditting 1403 Turkish Fine-Grind Application
Target Equipment:Ditting 1403 commercial grinder
Component Type:140 mm flat burr set
Material:Project-specified stainless steel configuration
Engineering Objective:Develop a burr geometry for an extra-fine Turkish coffee grinding application, with particle-size targets evaluated under specified grinder, material, and
test conditions.
The Challenge
The Ditting 1403 uses large-diameter 140 mm burrs for high-capacity commercial grinding. For a Turkish fine-grind application, the project required more than a dimensional replacement. Burr geometry, powder evacuation, thermal load, mounting stability, and inspection requirements all needed to be reviewed together. The main engineering risks were:
1. Thermal load: Fine grinding may increase contact and residence time, so operating temperature needed to be evaluated under the agreed test conditions.
2. Powder evacuation: The tooth-clearance design needed to support the movement of fine particles and reduce the risk of powder accumulation.
3. Mounting and structural stability: The large burr diameter and fine-grind load required the mounting interface, parallelism, and part stability to be reviewed.
Hotean Engineering Approach
01. Burr Geometry Review
The working face was developed with staged cutting regions. Tooth density, clearance, and shear geometry were reviewed for the intended fine-grindapplication.
02. CNC Machining & Inspection
The machining route was planned around the burr profile and mounting features. Critical dimensions and reference surfaces were checked against the agreed project specification.
03. Material & Surface Options
The specified stainless-steel configuration was processed according to project requirements. Optional TiN coating could be reviewed for applicable wear and surface requirements.
Technical Specifications and Inspection Scope
| Inspection Item | Project Requirement | Reported Result / Inspection Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Outer Diameter Housing Interface | 140.00 mm nominal diameter for the specified grinder housing and mounting configuration. | 140.00 mm measured on the inspected sample. Tolerance and measurement method should be confirmed against the agreed drawing or project specification. |
| Material & Hardness Project-Specified Configuration | SUS420 stainless steel specified for the selected burr configuration, with a target hardness above 55 HRC where required by the project. | SUS420 stainless steel used for the specified configuration. Hardness, heat-treatment route, and inspection records are confirmed according to the agreed production and quality requirements. |
| Flatness / Parallelism Mounting Stability | Reference surfaces and mounting features controlled for the intended close-clearance burr configuration. | Critical reference surfaces were inspected according to the agreed project specification. Any reported flatness, runout, or parallelism value applies only to the stated feature, sample, and measurement method. |
| Burr Geometry Fine-Grind Application | Flat-burr geometry developed for a commercial Turkish fine-grind application, subject to the complete grinder configuration and operating conditions. | Tooth profile, clearance, and mounting geometry were reviewed against the agreed project reference or design. Final particle-size performance should be validated using the complete grinder, specified coffee material, operating settings, and measurement method. |
| Food-Contact Documentation Project-Specific Review | Food-contact documentation may be required depending on the final material, heat treatment, surface finish, coating, intended market, and application conditions. | TÜV food-contact test documentation is available for a separately tested burr configuration using the same material family. The existing report does not cover this 140 mm burr set. Food-contact testing or documentation review for the final 140 mm configuration can be arranged by project. |
Scope note: This case study describes a project-specific 140 mm flat burr configuration. Dimensions, material condition, heat treatment, surface finish, inspection criteria, compatibility, and food-contact documentation are confirmed for each final product or project.
Project Results and Validation Scope
The developed burr configuration was reviewed against the project’s geometry, mounting, material, hardness, and fine-grind requirements.
Where particle-size or temperature data are reported, results apply only to the stated grinder, coffee material, operating settings, sample size, and measurement method. Final performance should be validated on the complete grinder under the customer’s intended conditions.
